The internet is fundamental. It must not become a two-tier service – one for the rich, one for the poorObamacare for the internet. That was how, at the height of the 2014 primary season, the Republican presidential hopeful, Ted Cruz, referred to the net neutrality rules proposed by the Obama administration. Designed to safeguard equitable access to the internet, they were enacted the following year. But they suffered a significant, albeit expected, blow when the US telecoms regulator, chaired by a Trump appointee,

9 Dec 2017, 7:05pm As corporate goliaths grow ever larger, Britain looks increasingly exposed | Will Hutton
A handful of companies now wields massive global power. Outside the EU, we will be their preyWe live in a world of corporate goliaths and the trend to gigantism is accelerating. The new era of hi-tech data capitalism has an embedded proclivity to monopoly. The bigger the network, whether Facebook or Google, the more valuable it is to be connected. Big is good in the digital universe, while even bigger is better. Meanwhile, analogue capitalism, confronted by the challenge of the new, is reacting by consolidating and merging into ever larger entities. Unless they do, comes the reply to any challenge from national competition authorities, they won’t have the heft and scale to meet the new competition. Increasingly, we are surrounded by the most awesome concentration of corporate power in the history of capitalism. In every industry, reported the Obama administration last year, the

Obama’s right, women are superior to men. Let me count the ways … | Julie Bindel 6 Dec 2017, 5:01am Obama’s right, women are superior to men. Let me count the ways … | Julie Bindel
From washing up to driving to major operations, we’re evidently more competent than men – because patriarchy has forced us to beAs a lifelong feminist I have always balked at the idea that women might be “better than men” because it perpetuates the myth that women and men are polar opposites, and that our skills (or lack of them) is to do with innate qualities rather than as a result of socialisation or opportunity. This particular competition of “who is best at what” further ingrains the false belief that “the battle of the sexes” is here for time immemorial. The reality is that after thousands of years of living under patriarchy, through no choice or fault of our own, women have developed certain skills as a result of this tyranny. A feminist friend once remarked that “if oppression made one a better person there would be something to be said for it”, and while I agree wholeheartedly with this, the truth is that we have had to become far better than men at most things.

Today Weinstein is in the headlines for an astonishing array of alleged sexual harassment and assaults, but once upon a time he was renowned for something quite different: his generous patronage of liberal politicians and progressive causes. This leading impresario of awful was an enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. He was a strong critic of racism, sexism and censorship. 3 Apr 2017, 2:52pm The Guardian view on Trump and North Korea: the risks are growing | Editorial
There are no good options for tackling Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons programme. But the military ones are by far the most alarmingNorth Korea’s nuclear programme has been a source of grave international concern for decades, with good reason. The issue is not, as popular portrayal might suggest, that the regime is unpredictable and irrational. On the contrary, it has proved itself committed to steadily advancing the development of weapons, and calculating in using that development to ensure its survival and extract benefits such as aid. Its extravagant threats, tests and other provocations have been reliable in their recurrence, if not always their timing or nature. After the failure of an aid-for-denuclearisation deal, and then of the six-party talks on the issue, the international community has been united in its opposition to the programme and its inability to address it meaningfully. Meanwhile, North Korea is advancing towards its goal of mounting a nuclear warhead on a long-range missile that could reach the US. The Obama team, whose “strategic patience” was less a policy than an admission of not having one, warned the incoming administration that Pyongyang was the top national security priority. A new approach would normally be welcome.

The first 25 days of Trump have been a zoetrope of galloping despair | Lindy West 14 Feb 2017, 11:40am The first 25 days of Trump have been a zoetrope of galloping despair | Lindy West
In the post-Obama United States, there are simply too many emergencies to hold all of them in your mind at once Today, during my morning routine of opening my laptop, clicking on literally anything, and just screaming and screaming, I made the astonishing discovery that Donald Trump has only been president of the United States for about three weeks. Which is weird, because I could have sworn we had fallen through a tesseract into the airless crush of a two-dimensional void at least seven eternities ago, or what would have constituted seven eternities if such a place had a linear concept of time. Turns out, though, it has only been 25 days, we are still on earth, and every cell in my body has not been excruciatingly flattened into pure math. It just feels like it. It’s an understandable mistake, I think. Trump has really been eat-pray-loving his way through his first month as the most dangerous man on earth, seeding so many potential atrocities – including, perhaps, the breakdown of the republic itself – that human consciousness has been reduced to a panicked blur, a zoetrope of galloping despair. There are simply too many emergencies to hold all of them in your mind at once. Cecily Strong captured the feeling on this week’s Saturday Night Live: “Let me just say, you’re doing too much. I want one day without a CNN alert that scares the hell out of me.”

America is deeply divided, but it’s not divided between fascists and Democrats. While Obama spoke to the whole country, including those who refused to hear him, Trump’s rhetoric is focused on himself, and those lined up behind himAmerica is about to experience a profound sense of whiplash as power is transferred from a president whose eloquence brought him to the public stage to one whose modes of communication are largely limited to political pep rallies (including the occasional pep rally disguised as a press conference) and “mean tweets”. We can argue until the end of time about how we got here: a Russian kompromat operation; a grandstanding, partisan FBI director; or a failure to plan campaign stops for the Democratic candidate in Milwaukee, Detroit and Philadelphia due to hubris or bad data or both. But what belies argument is the fact that we are witnessing a sea change in the way the president of the United States communicates – from “hope over fear” to “American carnage”.

It used to be the case that bigotry was frowned upon. But the president has now made it acceptable to openly hate The train was like the Hogwarts Express, but for feminists. Amtrak 141 left New York City at 9.35am on Friday, bound for Washington DC, and on the morning of Donald J Trump’s inauguration it was full of women wearing trainers, because they were women going to Washington to walk. Four years ago, this train must have been full of people heading to DC to celebrate Barack Obama’s second inauguration. And there must have been a Trump supporter somewhere in the crowd. But this train was filled with people skipping the inauguration, which takes place while we’re onboard. Trump may be a native son of New York, but, by and large, New Yorkers don’t like him and most of the people on the train were heading south for the main event on Saturday: the Women’s March.

Continuing shame of Guantánamo Bay | Letters 10 Jan 2017, 1:14pm Continuing shame of Guantánamo Bay | Letters
Tomorrow, Wednesday 11 January, human rights campaigners will mark the 15th year of Guantánamo Bay with a silent demonstration in Trafalgar Square from 12 noon. They will be dressed as sad clowns to signify that 15 years of indefinite detention without charge in Guantánamo is no joke. This demonstration also marks the failure of President Obama to fulfil his first pledge as president, eight years ago, to close Guantánamo. He consistently acknowledged that its existence is a stain on the US and on his presidency. To date, 55 prisoners remain there, isolated from the rest of the world. Of these, 19 have been approved for release and 26 are indefinitely imprisoned without charge. Seven prisoners face charges in a fake military commission court process that has nothing in common with justice. All these remaining prisoners should be shown compassion. They should be allowed to leave immediately before Donald Trump takes over. They are now old and infirm, many need walking aids or wheelchairs. They have suffered enough.

How Michelle Obama expanded the definition of a First Lady | Margo Jefferson 6 Jan 2017, 6:00am How Michelle Obama expanded the definition of a First Lady | Margo Jefferson
The rules imposed on her were constricting. So she expanded them and, in the process, won people over without betraying herself When Michelle Obama entered the White House, she had to contend with two onerous legacies. The first was a stale clutter of expectations and prohibitions about the proper role of The First Lady. The second was a cluster of stereotypes deeming black women unfit for any such role. A first lady was expected to display gracious manners, wear tasteful clothes and support worthy, uncontroversial causes. Whatever was hers alone – education, expertise, passion – had to be adapted to the needs of her husband’s presidency. She was there to please and enhance. A black woman, by contrast, was the opposite of that. Or that is, at least, what we’d always been told.

President Obama’s term passed without a whiff of scandal. But with Trump we face an era of lawsuits, feuds, threats, denials and insultsIt seemed too soon, and the metaphor was too crude. In the third week of November, less than two weeks after the election, they were already erecting some new structure across the street from the White House. They had fenced off most of Pennsylvania Avenue. Visitors wanting to take pictures of the White House were impeded by a giant cage, in which the structure was going up. Dozens of construction signs decorated the fence and sent a clear message of exclusion and foreboding: Danger, Warning, Keep Out. On one of the signs, as if noting the sheer obviousness of it all, someone had written: “Is this art?”

Writers must not be afraid to call some of Trump’s believers what they truly are What does it take to call a Nazi a Nazi? In the interminable fortnight since the election of Donald Trump, the US press has been floundering in a gyre of panic over the internal taxonomy of racists. For months, many (myself included) indulged Trump’s base in their euphemism of choice, the “alt-right”, an attempt to rebrand warmed-over Reconstruction-era white supremacy as a cool, new (and harmless!) internet fad. Despite the fact that Breitbart News (described by former honcho turned Trump adviser Stephen Bannon as “the platform for the alt-right”) had, at one point, a news tag labeled “black crime”, and was a driver of the racist conspiracy theory that Barack Obama was a secret Kenyan Muslim, the press contorted itself into labyrinthine knots to

4 Oct 2016, 11:20am Dear Barack Obama, thank you for not being an evil robot accountant | Lindy West
It never occurred to me that I could like a president. Thanks for saving the economy, calling yourself a feminist and not being another old white dude According to a racist clock I found on the internet, you only have 107 days, 22 hours, 37 minutes and five seconds left as president of the United States. Hopefully, when that happens, you will be replaced by our first female president instead of an authoritarian lamprey, but either way I will miss you a lot, bro.
